Advancing Geriatric Musculoskeletal Care Through Registries, Multicentre Studies & Global Partnerships

Academic & Clinical Leadership

IJGO Research Initiatives & Collaborations

The International Journal of Geriatric Orthopedics (IJGO), in conjunction with the Geriatric Orthopedic Society of India (GOSI), fosters proactive clinical initiatives designed to address the escalating healthcare challenges of an ageing population. We actively sponsor planning forums, multicentre clinical research protocols, and international exchange dialogues to transform geriatric musculoskeletal care.

Flagship National Project

IJGO Indian Hip Fracture Registry Initiative (Planning Forum)

Fragility hip fractures represent one of the most critical causes of morbidity, functional dependency, and mortality in older adults across India. While developed healthcare systems benefit from centralized national hip fracture registries (e.g., NHFD in the UK, ANZHFR in Australia & New Zealand), India faces distinctive challenges including delayed presentation, heterogeneous healthcare delivery, diverse socio-economic constraints, and under-resourced post-discharge rehabilitation.

The IJGO Indian Hip Fracture Registry Planning Forum is a nationwide consultative initiative established to develop a standardized, pragmatic, and secure registry framework tailored to the Indian clinical ecosystem.

Core Objectives & Minimum Data Set (MDS) in Development:
  • Patient Baseline: Pre-fracture cognitive status, premorbid mobility (Parker Mobility Score), ASA physical status, and frailty indices.
  • Perioperative Timelines: Time elapsed from injury to hospital presentation, time to definitive surgery, and reasons for delays (>24–48 hours).
  • Surgical & Anaesthetic Protocols: Regional vs general anaesthesia, surgical approach, implant selection (hemiarthroplasty vs total hip replacement vs cephalomedullary nailing), and intraoperative complications.
  • Orthogeriatric Co-Management: Preoperative medical stabilization, routine delirium screening, early weight-bearing (within 24 hours of surgery), and malnutrition interventions.
  • Secondary Fracture Prevention: Initiation of osteoporosis pharmacotherapy and Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) linkages before discharge.
  • Longitudinal Outcomes: 30-day, 90-day, and 1-year mortality rates, functional mobility recovery, and re-admission rates.

Join the Registry Planning Forum

We invite academic medical colleges, tertiary orthopaedic institutes, and community hospitals across India to join the Planning Forum as pilot data-collection centers and contribute to the national consensus guidelines.

Collaborative Science

Calls for Multicentre Research

Single-center studies in geriatric orthopaedics frequently suffer from limited sample sizes and institutional bias. IJGO promotes high-impact, prospective multicentre clinical trials, observational registries, and systematic audits across diverse geographical and socioeconomic tiers.

Call for Participation — Theme 1
Orthogeriatric Co-Management Models in India

Evaluating clinical outcomes, delirium incidence, length of hospital stay, and 30-day mortality in hospitals implementing joint orthopaedic-geriatric care protocols versus conventional surgical management.

Call for Participation — Theme 2
Atypical Femoral Fractures & Antiresorptive Therapy

A multi-hospital registry investigating clinical presentation, radiological patterns, surgical fixation outcomes, and secondary bone turnover management in elderly South Asian patients with atypical femoral fractures.

Call for Participation — Theme 3
Sarcopenia, Malnutrition & Trauma Resilience

Validating rapid diagnostic bedside criteria (handgrip strength, SARC-F, and serum biomarkers) to triage postoperative complication risks among elderly trauma patients.

Multicentre Collaboration Governance:
  • Ethical Adherence: All multicentre protocols must obtain approval from local Institutional Ethics Committees (IEC) and register with clinical trial registries (e.g., CTRI / ClinicalTrials.gov).
  • Collaborative Authorship: In compliance with ICMJE standards, all contributing investigators meeting collaborative criteria will be formally credited in published manuscripts and indexed in PubMed/Crossref.
  • Centralized Data Safety: De-identified data collection conforming to standard data protection regulations and transparent statistical analysis plans.

Are you a Principal Investigator planning a collaborative study? IJGO’s Scientific Committee provides protocol review and pre-study peer feedback for multicentre proposals.

Global Outreach

International Spotlight

Geriatric orthopaedic care is an inherently global endeavor. The International Spotlight initiative bridges Indian orthopaedic clinicians with world-renowned geriatric societies, researchers, and clinical centres across the globe.

  • Global Clinical Exchange: Facilitating international invited commentaries, guest editorials, and comparative cross-country analyses between low-middle income countries and established healthcare models.
  • International Advisory Board Collaboration: Direct involvement of leading global experts in orthogeriatric trauma, biomechanics, osteoporosis, and rehabilitative science to mentor emerging clinical researchers.
  • Virtual Masterclasses & Journal Clubs: Periodic international webinars and evidence-based case discussions connecting international pioneers with fellows and young orthopaedic surgeons.

"Universal challenges in elderly fragility fracture care demand international solidarity. By connecting regional epidemiological data with global standards, IJGO is building bridges for worldwide orthogeriatric excellence."
