The International Journal of Geriatric Orthopedics (IJGO), The Official publication of the Geriatric Orthopedic Society Of India is launched with the primary objective of providing a focused academic platform for the dissemination of research, clinical experience, and innovations pertaining to the musculoskeletal health of the elderly. The journal emerges at a critical juncture when the global demographic landscape is witnessing an unprecedented rise in the ageing population, leading to a concomitant increase in age-related orthopedic conditions.
The field of geriatric orthopedics encompasses the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders in older adults. It is distinguished by the interplay of multiple physiological, psychological, and social factors that influence outcomes in this vulnerable group. The management of fractures in osteoporotic bone, degenerative joint diseases, spine disorders, sarcopenia, and fall prevention strategies represent just a few of the challenges that demand a multidisciplinary and patient-centered approach. Despite its growing importance, geriatric orthopedics remains underrepresented in mainstream orthopedic literature, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The establishment of IJGO seeks to address this gap by serving as a conduit for evidence-based knowledge and best practices in this emerging specialty.
The mission of the International Journal of Geriatric Orthopedics is threefold:
IJGO will publish peer-reviewed articles including original research papers, systematic reviews, case series, technical notes, and invited editorials. The journal aims to maintain high scientific standards through a rigorous peer-review process, adherence to ethical publication practices, and a commitment to academic integrity. By fostering both national and international contributions, IJGO aspires to become a credible and accessible repository of knowledge in the domain of geriatric orthopedics.
On behalf of the Editorial Board, I express sincere gratitude to the contributors, reviewers, and the Geriatric Orthopedic Society Of India for their support and encouragement in realizing this vision. The successful launch of this inaugural issue is a testament to the collective commitment of clinicians and researchers dedicated to improving the quality of life of the ageing population.
We envision the International Journal of Geriatric Orthopedics as more than just a publication — as an evolving academic forum that bridges clinical practice and scientific inquiry, fostering innovation and excellence in geriatric musculoskeletal care. We look forward to receiving valuable contributions from the global medical community as we embark on this important academic journey.
